The Philippine domestic banking system is dominated by conglomerate-owned universal banks but is being rapidly disrupted by a world-class digital financial services ecosystem.

Conglomerate Banking Structure

BDO Unibank (SM Group): largest bank by assets, dominant retail network. BPI (Bank of the Philippine Islands, Ayala Group): second largest, merger with Robinsons Bank (2023) expanded market share. Metrobank (GT Capital): major corporate and retail lender. Landbank of the Philippines: state-owned, primary agricultural credit provider and government payroll bank. Philippine National Bank (PNB): privatized, serving corporate and retail segments.

BSP Digital Banking Licenses (2020)

BSP created a dedicated Digital Bank license category allowing fully branchless, app-based banking operations. Six licenses awarded: Tonik Digital Bank, UnionDigital Bank (UnionBank subsidiary), GoTyme Bank (Gokongwei-Tyme partnership), Maya Bank (PayMaya/PLDT), OFBank (Overseas Filipino Bank, LandBank subsidiary), and UNObank. These digital banks offer: high-yield savings accounts (competitive with time deposits), instant loan approvals using alternative credit data, seamless e-wallet integration.

GCash and Maya: The Super-App Revolution

GCash (G-Xchange, Globe Telecom): 81M+ registered users, processed trillions in transactions annually. Services: peer-to-peer transfers, bill payments, QR code payments (GCash QR), micro-investments (GFunds), micro-insurance (GInsure), buy-now-pay-later (GCredit, GLoan). Maya: second major super-app from PLDT/Smart, similarly integrated with Maya Bank for seamless savings and credit access.

InstaPay and PESONet: The BSP Payment Rails

InstaPay: real-time, 24/7 small-value fund transfer system. PESONet: batch settlement electronic fund transfer for larger transactions. These BSP-operated rails connect all banks, rural banks, cooperative banks, and e-wallets, providing universal interoperability across the entire financial ecosystem.
